About Me

My Background

Jeff Kinzel has been working with the medium of foil for more than thirty years, applying it to both figurative and representational subjects. Born and raised in New York, Jeff pursued his initial art studies at the Art Students League and the National Academy, also working as a studio assistant to painter Ellsworth Kelly. Later, he undertook graduate art courses at the University of Iowa. He maintains an art studio in Asheville, NC.

Foil as a Material

Description of work

I start with a photo. It is scaled up and then transferred into foil and adhered onto a canvas. Foil is very thin and commonly used in packaging as a metallic, gloss or even for a matte effect. Layers of foil create a richer and more nuanced look. It's like a combination of offset printing and painting.

What's hard to see on this website is the way in which the image comes alive with light. As the day changes so does the piece. Dim light may bring out a matte surface, while bright light may cause the metallics to glow brightly. There's no illusion of light. It is light itself. Colors and shapes will change much like in nature
